Master Wonhyo: The Dancing Monk

THE PROJECT
A documentary film, exploring Wonhyo’s philosophy and his extraordinary life. It also demonstrates how Wonhyo’s teachings are relevant to the modern world and help to solve the problems and conflicts that people face today.
SYNOPSIS
Master Wonhyo was an extraordinary monk who left the confines of the temple to live a life of ‘Mu-Ae,’ or non-hindrance. He lived among the ordinary people as a layman, spreading Dharma through singing and dancing.
Since he lived outside the confines of authority and custom, he faced a great deal of criticism in his day. But undoubtedly he was one of the most influential figures in Korean history and influenced great masters of East Asia.
This documentary examines the suffering that people face today and demonstrates how Wonhyo’s teachings and practices are as relevant today as they were in his time. It features interviews with prominent Wonhyo scholars in the U.S. and Japan and Venerable monks from diverse schools of Buddhism. It also visits villages and mountain temples in South Korea to explore Wonhyo’s extraordinary life and profound influence.
In addition, this documentary shows how people from various religions and cultures can unite through the song and dance of ‘Mu-Ae.’
FILMMAKER'S NOTE
I am not a successful person in any conventional sense. I had lived forty- four years without building either wealth or fame. I had worked on many projects that exerted positive impacts on people’s lives, but mainly I had lived in the company of books, contemplating the meaning of existence.
Ever since I lost my dear little sister three years ago, I had had the desire to renounce the secular world. The thought of my mother, however, kept me from taking this path. I had tried to find meaning in my work and daily activities, but often got frustrated.!
Wonhyo opened my eyes and taught me that I could use my own talents and resources to engage in a wholesome practice in this world. His philosophy, beliefs, and extraordinary life of ‘Mu-Ae’ have become my guiding light, leading me to the path of Enlightenment.
Wonhyo said, “I wish to use words to show the Dharma that is beyond words, just like using a finger to point at the moon, which is separate from the finger.”
Likewise, I wish to make this film to inspire people and help them to learn how to embrace differences, expand compassion, discover their true potentials, and live in harmony with the world.
